The Au Pairs #3: Sun-Kissed

The Au Pairs #3: Sun-Kissed

Get ready for another hot summer in the Hamptons with Eliza, Mara and Jacqui. This time the ladies have all graduated high school and are contemplating their futures.

Eliza begins her internship with a big fashion designer. The job is stressful and boring, and that's only after one day. Then she is asked to style some dull outfits, and she gets into it in a big way. After making a huge splash at the fashion show, she's fired and left searching for a job at a local diner. Jeremy is still her boyfriend, but he criticizes her attitude about work. With the help of her two best girls, she decides to show him --- and the entire Hamptons fashion world --- exactly what she's made of.

Mara is spending the summer on Ryan's family yacht with just Ryan while interning at a magazine. Her position turns into writing a regular gossip column, which means lots of parties and late nights, and her cozy summer planned with Ryan turns into arguments about her schedule. In the fall she's supposed to go to Dartmouth, where he is, but she's wait-listed. In the meantime she visits Columbia and loves it, further confusing matters.

Jacqui returns as au pair to the Perrys, who seem headed toward divorce. She finds out she did not get into college because her Brazilian transcripts don't have all the requirements, and may actually have to spend more time in high school. If that's the case, then she'll need to stay employed with the Perrys, which means they cannot divorce. She pulls her friends into a Parent Trap scheme without telling them about her failed college prospects. In the midst of all this, there are the three hot neighbor guys who want to be with her.

Au Pairs fans will enjoy reading about where these three friends are heading. While the clothing and party descriptions add ambience, the strength of this series has always been the friendship among the girls. The problems are real, and although many storylines are tied up neatly yet satisfyingly, there are surprises in this installment. While it's uncertain whether or not the series will continue (Melissa de la Cruz is already launching a few new series, including Blue Bloods), it's clear that Eliza, Mara and Jacqui are headed toward futures supported by one another.
