A Court of Thorns and Roses

Feyre is used to taking care of her family. In the years since her mother died, she has worked tirelessly to put food on the table and clothes on their backs despite their ungrateful attitude. But by killing one wolf in the woods --- a wolf that could feed her family for days and happens to be a faerie --- she unknowingly enrages one of the lethal faeries that used to rule over her world. She is faced with a choice: die a brutal death or become his captive.

Dragged into a dangerous, magical world with her imprisoner, Tamlin, Feyre begins living a life she never dreamed possible. Filled with deceit and beauty, the fae world is like nothing she has ever known, and she is surprised by how much this new world excites her. As she spends more time with Tamlin, she begins to realize there is much more to the faeries --- and to him--- than she had originally thought. But Feyre is completely unprepared for the new threat lurking in the fae world, one that threatens to tear her and Tamlin apart. Determined to save him and the deadly world she has learned to call home, Feyre will put everything she has on the line.

Sarah J. Maas is known for her excellent world building, characters and plot, and with A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES, she has done it again. Though different from the Throne of Glass series, Though different from the Throne of Glass series, A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES still delivers an epic fantasy tale that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the sequel’s release. The world of the novel is very imaginative with its two separate realms: the mortal lands and the faerie realms. The majority of the novel is spent in the faerie realms, although there are a couple of scenes featuring the mortal lands. The contrast between the two is striking and heightens the difference between the characters.

Sarah J. Maas creates a variety of diverse characters in A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES. Feyre, the main character, is full of surprises throughout the novel. She is always sacrificing her happiness for others’, especially her family’s. She has amazing chemistry with Tamlin, who is a very interesting character in his own right. He has two sides to his personality: the animalistic, bestial side and a gentler side. Along with Feyre and Tamlin, Sarah J. Maas includes an array of other characters that add humor, depth and mystery to the novel. Readers can look forward to the chance to delve deeper into certain characters’ personalities in future novels.

The plot of this novel is filled with the perfect combination of action, romance and suspense. An overall enticing tale, A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES is another thrilling addition to the high fantasy genre.
