20 Questions: A Day in the Life of Alexandra Bracken

Posted by tbrmaureen

Alexandra Bracken, author of THE DARKEST MINDS, a sci-fi trilogy about a young girl who escapes a mysterious illness that kills most of the kids in America, recently took some time to answer our "20 Questions" survey sharing what a typical day is like for her. From her great aunt sharing the book at her nursing home, to watercooler chats with her co-workers, Alexandra sheds some light on what it's like to be an author and work in children's publishing.

1. What time did you wake up?
7:35 AM, which is the last possible second I could get up and not be late for work.

2. Did you make your bed?
No. Sigh. I'm trying to be better about this, but it always seems too futile to make something I'm just going to mess up again in a few hours.

3. Where did you spend your day?
I spent most of my day in the office!  I work for a major publishing house in children's book publishing. Our offices are somewhere between Times Square and Columbus Circle.

4. Who did you see/call?
My fabulous coworkers, and my delightful roommate, who just told me the most hilarious story about her holiday office party that involved a slow karaoke striptease. (She also works in publishing!)

5. How many times did you check Facebook or Twitter?
Um... going to plead the Fifth on this one. Can I just say more than once less than thirty?

6. Did you respond to reader mail?
No, but I marked the ones I'm going to reply to in just a bit to make sure they didn't get lost under the 10,000 emails Ann Taylor LOFT sends me daily.

7. What did you do on a book project today?
I'm in the process of plotting out book 3, so I'm still loosely outlining.

8. How did you procrastinate?
I made myself an apple cider k-cup in the Keurig machine the fire marshal told us we're not allowed to have. (We hide it in a small conference room.) I also gossiped with my bosses and coworkers.

9. What did you accomplish?
Organizing my inbox and our galley closet to make room for the new 2013 titles coming in.

10. What did you want to accomplish?
A lot more!  I have ad copy to write!  And now that I'm home, plots to untangle!

11. What was the weather?
Cooooooold. I'm a desert child, so anything under 60 degrees makes me grumpy.

12. What were you wearing?
A cute sweater with a fox on it layered over a Peter Pan collar shirt, black jeans, and oxfords.

13. What did you read?
I'm reading James Dashner's new book going to and from work on the subway. Can't tell you the title or what it's about, though! (Muwahaha)

14. Did you listen to music, if so what?
My subway experience is made 100x better by listening to Mumford & Sons on the way to work. I just discovered a new artist called Passenger that I'm also really into--his music was on a recent episode of Elementary.

15. What was the healthiest and unhealthiest thing you ate?
Healthiest: Salad from Balducci's. Unhealthiest: My breakfast sandwich with sausage.

16. Did you exercise?
I'm heading to the gym right after this, I swear!

17. What was the best part of the day?
Opening up my Tumblr dashboard to find that people had sent me fan mail for THE DARKEST MINDS.

18. What was the worst part of the day?
I'm going to go with that lady who elbow-checked me in the face on the subway and didn't even apologize. Rude!

19. Any surprises today?
My Great Aunt--bless her heart--loved THE DARKEST MINDS and has been trying to pass it onto "all of the other old fogeys" at her nursing home.

20. What device did you use to answer these questions?
My trusty MacBook Pro laptop.
